I just don't get it...

I guess when I first started this blogging business, I really wanted it to be something that would be meaningful to other people. I don't mean that I wanted to change the world, but I told myself before I started that I only wanted to post things that were important to me and would hopefully encourage others and be uplifting.
I has definilty become an encouragement to me as I read about people's struggles and see how they overcome them, or the joys in their lives. I love looking at pictures of families or little babies growing up. To see people become friends over blogs, and encourage each other by comments and discuss important issues is really cool.
I honestly think that blogging can become a nasty habit though too unfortuantely. I've seen it on a few blogs now...people venting and talking about other people negatively, or people writing down every single detail of their day, and posting almost 4 times a day. It astounds me, and I just don't get it. I think blogging can become addicting and takes us away from our priorities. Would any of you agree?
I guess I come from the mindset that if it gets to the point where you are writing about others or things that are happening between people you work with or are just friends with, maybe that should be conserved for a journal instead of an on-line journal for the entire world to see.
Maybe I'm off track here, but I think there are some things that need to just be kept off the blogging world.
Do any of you think that there should be some things left unsaid on blogs, or is it ok to really say everything you are thinking, or can this get us into trouble? I think it most definitly can.
Let me know what you think, I am honestly curious.

melissa i totally agree. i think that is the reason why i don't post on my blog very often. it's super important to me to only post things that i actually want other people to see, or know. it can totally become a 'venting system' and i think that can become an unhealthy way of expressing your problems/fears/whatever else you need off your chest. anyway, yes i agree!

i really do watch what i say on my blog...because there are so many people out there who read them, and i want to be sensitive. that's not to say that if i feel like i really need to say something - then i won't. but i don't want to offend or especially bash anyone. i hope i havn't! if you see that i am, please tell me!!

Janelle,
Don't feel like I was pointing fingers at anyone! You have never offended anyone:) I love your blog posts. I just thought it would be an interesting question to put out there. Is there a line that should not be crossed and what do we do if someone is crossing it, is there such thing as "too much" on our blogs. I think you do a healthy job on your blog to keep us up to date but also state your opinion in a thought provoking way.

Hey Melissa,

I thought I answer your questions about why I blog, since I guess I'm someone who blogs in the kind of manner you outline in your post. (Don't worry, I'm not offended at all about anything you said in your post, since I'm confident in the reasoning behind my incessant blogging. Oh, and sorry because this got really long.)

For me, blogging is a hobby, which is why I write often in my blog, but it's also much more than that. It's a way to keep connected with friends that live far away, it's a way to meet new people, and it's a way to entertain and encourage everyone who reads it. I feel that in order to accomplish these things, I need to make sure my blog reflects who I am.
So really, why a person is blogging all depends on what they intend their blog to be.

Since my intentions are those outlined above, I do not restrict my blog only to issues or spiritual advice, nor do I feel that just writing about positive experiences would adequately reflect who I am and how I deal with things. Therefore I try to be as real as possible on my blog, while trying to make sure that I offend as few people as possible (I mean by writing about others).

This very same principle is what I do to live my life, as well. How I live and what I write are two things that I think should be closely connected if I am to accomplish the goals I have set for my blog. No, I don't always meet those goals or write within the tactful standards regarding others in my blog; and no, I don't always do this in my life, either. That doesn't mean I don't stop trying, but it does mean that God can use my weaknesses, in my life & my blog, to shed His grace and mercy.

So, to answer some of your "curiosities", as you put it: yes, it's important to watch what you say on a blog, just as you would in life. Yes, I suppose people could get "obsessed" with blogging, as you said, but people can get obsessed with all kinds of things. No, you shouldn't talk about people negatively, not in real life so certainly not on a blog. And as far as the venting & ranting, I find my blog to be a safe arena where I find a network of friends who can relate or reply to certain things in my life that are upsetting. Of course it's not a good place to vent/rant about just anything, but getting upset about things is natural and it's part of making my blog real.

I've blogged for 2½ years, and this is where my blog has ended up. I'm sure it won't stop changing, either, and I'm sure I have a lot to learn yet about writing, blogging and discernment in the matter.

I know well that you are not pointing any fingers, but you did seem sincerely curious about this, so I thought I would sincerely & candidly reply since I seem to be someone that might be able to shed some light on it. I personally think voicing your curiosity in this matter on a blog is a pretty good place for questions and opinions.

Thanks for your thoughts. Have a great day! I hope this helps answer your questions. :)

Hey Tanya,

Just wanted to respond to your comment on my blog. First off, thanks for the input. I honestly was curious as to what people's thoughts were on this issue, so to get a great feedback from someone is always encouraging. I really enjoyed reading your post, as it made me think and ponder about a lot of things that I had not thought about before.
My reasoning for writing this post was no more than curiosity and most definitly because I had been questioning my own reasoning for blogging. I never wanted to point fingers at anyone, and I am glad you know that as you had mentioned in your post.

I think you made some great points in there, and very clearly laid them out. Although I may not agree with all of them, I do think everyone has the right to their own ideas of what their blog intends to be as you stated, and thus every blog comes across a different way.
Have a great rest of the week Tanya!
